Introduction
What you will be reading in the following pages are the words of students sharing their feelings and stories related to the impact that Carl Rogers and the person-centered approach had on their lives. Although they will share how I as their counselor impacted them, I want the reader to fully appreciate that it is an influence of: my graduate school instructors, who introduced me to the books, On Becoming a Person and Freedom to Learn; my school principal, George Simpson that trusted me and allowed me the freedom to take, what was then called the client-centered approach, with our students; The LaJolla Program at Center for the Studies of the Person; and lastly, but primarily, the influence of Carl Rogers* and what I learned as the client-centered approach and what is now known as the person-centered approach. In his books, I felt like Rogers was writing to me personally, giving me the courage to be myself, encouraging me to listen to my students and to love them just as they are.
As you read, students are sharing from their heart about their experiences with me. Please keep in mind that they are actually talking about their experience with the counselor who had taken to heart the person-centered approach and who attempted to live out Rogers’ theory (see below), as I was just beginning to understand the theory and approach.
